The City of Langley has pioneered a method of implementing public WiFi at a fraction of the cost of deploying “carrier-grade” systems.


Implementing Low‐Cost Public WiFi

The City of Langley, British Columbia, Canada has pioneered a method of implementing public WiFi at a fraction of the cost of deploying “carrier‐grade” systems. They worked with Hotspotsystem.com, a service provider based out of Budapest, Hungary (servers located on most continents) to modify their hosted hotspot system to support larger WiFi coverage areas that are typical in municipal deployments. Features of our implementation include:

• A hosted hotspot solution that can be white‐labeled and configured to suit the requirements of the municipality or organization.
  
• Independent Internet connections at separate locations supporting one or more access points.
  
• Seamless movement of WiFi users through access point coverage areas and locations.
  
• Support for a variety of off‐the‐shelf wireless routers and access points based on the availability of a
  firmware update that turns the device into a hotspot.
  
• Unfiltered public WiFi access.
  
  This document is to assist the IT personnel of any municipality or organization that wishes to implement a low‐cost WiFi hotspot solution. It details the way we have gone about implementing our B‐NET Free WiFi Zone that you can follow or change for your particular implementation.
