My setup is a little different then most. I use multiple devices from different manufacturers. For firmware it's slightly varied by device. The Ubiquiti devices (including the UAR-LR unifi enterprise) run the SDK mods from hotspotsystem. The linksys 54g's are running dd-wrt and are will be phased out over the next little while due to the restrictive nature of the devices, broadcast capability as well as if they are turned too high on transmit... it seems to splatter the channel some. Asus WL-520GU will give you the best bang for your buck broadcasting at 500mw giving you the most coverage per dollar then any of the other units. It is also running dd-wrt sp1.
The placement of the units, i started small with that to keep initial costs down and see the network not go through many problems initially to keep the service looking reputable. I started with the 2 cafe's in town and added in kiosks. It's simple to set up a wifi rule on the machine using netsh and providing a limited account to keep maintenance down. I then approached the municipality with a proposal to utilize their bandwidth and wireless backbone (im their tech so that probably helped some) to give me the capability to deploy anywhere in town; as well as drop and deploy solutions where no services may be accessible. With this infrastructure in place expansion becomes easy and painless.
All antennas are omnidirectional high gain antennas to help facilitate the original goal of this project, creating a low cost scalable mesh network with a low infrastructure cost.
I've enclosed a couple pictures of device types im using in addition to the 546 units I'm phasing out due to performance reasons. For confidential reason as my points mostly reside @ people businesses in hidden places and municipal government buildings and tower sites i cannot post pictures of those. This has been a transition from a self owned/hosted NOC over to hotspotsystem and so far it's been near flawless and the new system is running great. The few odd issues I've had the staff were great about helping and doing what they can to accommodate any situations. Cant wait to get the rest of the devices over as the town has agreed to allow another few locations including municipal campground and what we call tent city here for a yearly event called the Canadian Death Race

Hi, thanks for sharing, could you upload some real world photos of the location / installation?

As i mentioned before most the placements of where units are in i would not be able to provide pictures due to the nature of the locations. I could possibly do a kiosk or two, anything more would be out of the question i hope you could understand as it's not my right to give out pictures of municipal government sites.
