My small installation is based in a residential apartment block in Basingstoke, Hampshire, UK.

I utilise two ex-Fon routers with upgraded antennae to cover the area. Both routers are based in the western side of the block and have dd-wrt installed. The primary router is a WRT54GL version 1.1. The slave is a "La Fonera". The WRT54GL has two 9dBi omni-directional antennae with dd-wrt set to manage the send and receive ports automatically. The Fonera has a "Fontenna" connected, which is a 9dBi uni-directional antenna, aimed at the eastern side so as to hopefully cover the remainder of the population that isn't caught by the WRT.

The internet connectivity is provided by a pfSense-based router connected to a British Telecom fibre-to-the-cabinet VDSL2 broadband line rated at ~40Mbit/s downstream.

Hotspot System is utilised via the dd-wrt in-built HSS configuration option on both routers. The WRT is set as the main router for a (the) location, and the Fonera is set as WDS#1. I have 4 options for access credit varying from 1hour to 1month. The most popular option among my (few) clients is one week's credit via credit card payment.

(Paypal is less popular among my clients than the CC payment provider. I, also, do not use the voucher system as I have no on-site premises (storefront or such) from which to vend them.)

Further to my case study, I have now implemented a custom splash page on my site which links to HSS with my location using a modified theme to make it look very similar to my main site so as to enable a seamless transition from my own splash to HSS's payment screens. My site is using Drupal with a "block" with it's visibility set so that hotspot users see a customised message inviting them to login, which is not shown to the general public.
