Hello,
the HotSpotSystem has been performing surprisingly well here in sunny Coral Bay, St. John, USVI for about a year. Being on an island in the middle of the ocean, makes for very spotty service, no matter if it is electricity, phones, internet, or food and water. When power or internet go down, as they often do, the HotSpotSystem bounces back very quickly when they return, unlike the other services on the island. That is a big plus for our customers and, we feel, a service to our tight knit community.
Our recycled and re-purposed Motorola WR850GP transmitting 70mW and running HotSpotWRT 1.22 by HotSpotSystem.com CoovaAP Firmware - version 1.0 beta.8 has been placed on the roof of our 2 story rented shop, connected to a 20dB Yagi antenna with a short 8 inch feed into a Nema box that houses the Motorola WR850GP circuit board only so that it could fit inside it. The relentless Caribbean heat was a concern, as the Nema box has been made water tight. Though it has breezed through the summer temps with out a whimper!
The terrain around our Yagi varies from flat water harbor to steep hills. About a 90 degree view is flat over the Coral Bay Harbor extending about 1 mile line of sight. The remaining 270 degrees quickly becomes a 2,000 ft tall steep hill side, beginning about 200ft from the Yagi. Though many customers are still able to easily connect to our system. One customer regularly reports that he can receive 4 to 5 bars of signal, out of a possible 6, on his boat, about 1/2 mile from our Yagi.
One tip, I think others may find useful, is when a customer is signing up / logging in using an Apple product, it is often required to set the device to allow popups. If this is not done, the device, for some reason, will not register the signup, apparently because the popup box with the remaining time status in it has not been allowed to popup.
We thank you very much for a fine running and virtually "turn key" system.
Sincerely,
Coral Bay Computers
