Opera Mini (or Opera Mobile in Turbo mode) does not work to login.

The reason is that those browsers do not evaluate the webpage themselves, but instead connect to a remote server, which retrieves and evaluates the page, compress it, and sends it to the handheld. But the remote server is not yet accessible, and even if it was, the remote server would not see the logon page the same way that the local device would.

I suspect we need to learn to live with it, just tell the clients who come to the desk to complain to use the default browser, even if it is for the logon screen only.

So this post is more of a FYI than a question.

Still, if anyone thinks of something clever to work around the issue, let me know.

you are perfectly right. If you are using a hotspot system, all pages are forbidden except our servers and additional allowed sites. But if you added opera's site to the allowed list, that would mean that all webpages would be browsable freely as all pages are coming through opera's servers. So there is no workaround for this.

The newly released Kindle Fire has the same disadvantages except that users can turn off the 'page optimization' in kindle fire so the browser will work like other browsers and that way it would work with a hotspot.
