Do you guys think its a good idea to block various update servers? Microsoft, Adobe, maybe some more common 'poluters'? To prevent background traffic that can be postponed till later?

Or better yet, did anyone already do this, and have a handy list ready :)

Obviously, hotspots that have a pay per volume should not do this, but for the free service this may be an idea.

Hello,

well we don't have such a list, but it can be done by a firewall.

But i don't think such a list exists as update servers are always changing. It would be hard to maintain this list.

Well that would depend on what environment your hotspot(s) are running in, If this is in a restraunt, coffee shop, Bar ect, Then I would think it would be ok, HOWEVER if you are running as an WISP for a small town or what have you, I would say its a bad Idea. Afterall , if people are paying you for a monthly service ( think ATT, Mediacom, Comcast ) they are expecting unlimmited access and if you block update sites like that people will stop using your service if you dont allow them to do something as basic as update thier operating sysem or other software.
